New international airport to be developed near Pécs?
The government is ‘open to’ developing the international airport at Pogány near Pécs, in southern Hungary, if it can reach an agreement with the local government, its current owner, at ongoing talks concerning the airport’s future, Péter Hoppál, an MP for Pécs, said at the facility on Thursday.
“The development of the Pogány airport is essential for boosting the economic development of Baranya County, its seat, Pécs and the entire region,” Hoppal told a press conference.
Hoppál, an MP for ruling Fidesz, said that since a large-scale investment project such as developing an airport would
cost billions of forints
which the local government does not have, “it is important that the state step in as a partner in the project”. He expressed hope that an agreement could be reached at the talks and the airport’s “state ownership, a precondition for starting the airport’s development, would become a reality, allowing the boosting of the region’s economic development.
János Kővári, a local government councillor and a regional development commissioner, said at the press conference that in lack of a sufficient budget,
Pécs should seize the opportunity and reach an agreement with the state.
